Mom's Fireplace Mantel Makeover

For the past several years, mom has been begging dad to make her a wood mantel to fit over their existing sandstone fireplace top. I thought I would help lighten the "hunnie-to-do" list and for Christmas, I told mom I would make her a new wood mantel. She was overjoyed! Mom and I had painted her sandstone fireplace about four years ago and I agree that the all-white fireplace needed something to break up the light tones... something to warm the mantel.

I used the same process as I did on my cousin's fireplace mantel which you can find here. The only difference was instead of making a 2x4 floating structure as I did on my cousins, I made mom's mantel to fit right over the existing sandstone top. Super simple!

I got the rustic barn wood from a local hardware and with the help from dad (he still ended up helping), we cut the wood to the sizes we needed. We glued our joints together and then ran brad nails into them. Can I get a drumroll, please?

Ta-da! All done and beautiful! I love the contrast the warm wood tones have against the white/cream paint colors. 

After the mantel was all done, I styled up the fireplace for spring. She had thrifted all the mirrors/old photo frame, which was the perfect final pieces amongst the faux ferns.
